Colm Meaney hasn’t appeared in any Star Trek series since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Colm Meaney played Chief O’Brien on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and in the last of episode of the latter series, his character accepted a teaching position at Starfleet Academy, effectively taking him out of space which is something Meaney himself can relate to. When asked in 2021 if he would return to Star Trek, the actor said he felt like seven years in space was long enough.

"No, I’ve always kind of felt like seven years in space was long enough. I had a great time doing it. And sometimes, you’re always a bit loathe to go back, especially with something that you enjoyed and was successful because going back, sometimes things end up being ruined."

He did follow that with “but you never say never,” then clarified that returning as O’Brien wasn’t something that was in the forefront of his mind. However, one thing would change his mind.

Colm Meaney would suit up again if Michael Dorn was leading a Worf series

Meaney, in an interview with Big Issue, confirmed he would happily jump back into space for a Star Trek series centered around Michael Dorn’s character, Worf.

"“Oh, absolutely I’d go for that,” Meaney says. “I love Michael.”"

Fans have wanted a Worf series for decades now, but it doesn’t appear to be an idea the studio is interested in. So even though Michael Dorn is behind the idea, Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi) thinks it’s a great idea, it would bring Chief O’Brien back to the Star Trek Universe, and it already has a built-in audience, the odds of such a series actually coming to fruition seem incredibly slim at the moment. Hope does spring eternal, and we can only hope that this opportunity isn’t wasted. Not only would we love to see Worf on our screens on a weekly basis, but Worf and O’Brien working together would be a series well worth watching!

Next. Michael Dorn already has a script for a Worf show ready for CBS. dark
