Star Trek: Picard may have a spinoff and if so, who should star in it?

When Star Trek: Picard returns, it’ll be entering its third and final season as a show. The adventures of Jean-Luc Picard will end with The Next Generation’s core cast reuniting to send off Patrick Stewart in style. That doesn’t mean the cast of the show will never again dawn the Trek attire, as there are talks surrounding several possible spinoff ideas.

Trek recently spun off Strange New Worlds from Discovery and created it as a prequel to the original series. Where Picard lands in the timeline, there really isn’t anything after it in the timeline (within reason). So anything that gets spun out will likely serve as a sequel series of sorts.

There are plenty of possibilities and characters to further explore but with the ages of some of these actors and actresses, a long-term series may not be the best bet. So most likely whatever spins out of this will likely also be a short-term series, just like Picard.

Three Star Trek: Picard spinoff ideas

A “Captain” series

There are three candidates who deserve their own show, featuring them as captains. Those would be Seven of Nine, Worf, and Geordi La Forge. Worf is the most popular idea that fans have wanted, but Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) is young enough that you could easily plan for five or six seasons worth of filming and not have the same concerns as you would with a 70-something-year-old. That was a big concern with revisiting Picard with Patrick Stewart as if he’d even be able to handle filming.

Wesley Crusher’s time travel

Even though Wil Wheaton has said he’s not in the third season, that may be a misdirection. Even if he’s not, his arrival at the end of season two has set up the idea that Wesley Crusher is still traveling the cosmos. So why not a show that sees the immortal (we think?) Crusher exploring the depths of the Star Trek universe long thought to never be seen.

Will Riker’s Federation

Putting Will Riker in charge of the Federation works if you’re not looking at doing a single story. If you want to continue the story of all those involved, having Riker serving as an admiral in Star Fleet would make perfect sense. That way you can have Geordi La Forge, Worf, Seven of Nine, and even the likes of Elnor all pop-up.
