If you haven’t given Star Trek: Lower Decks a chance yet, you can watch the first episode of season three for free.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is back for its third season. The series is a light-hearted, comedic take on Star Trek that uses animation as a way to really cut costs that would otherwise be huge for a Trek series. The animation is stylized after more modern adult cartoons like Rick and Morty and features some of its more intense brand of humor.

The series stars The Boys star Jack Quaid as the bumbling Brad Boilmer, as well as acclaimed Talking Heads enthusiast, Tawny Newsome as Becket Mariner. Noel Wells and Eugene Cordero round out the other four leads, playing D’Vana Tendi and Sam Rutherford respectively.

Dawnn Lewis and Jerry O’Connell are also in the series as Carol Freeman and Jack Ransom, adding some very notable names to the series.

The series is well received by critics for its writing and fans seem to enjoy it in part due to the writing but also due to the numerous and bountiful references to past Star Trek shows and films.

For new fans, this may not be for you, as most of the series relies on inside jokes about past Star Trek properties, as well as cameos from past Star Trek actors. It’s an adult comedy also makes it not the best series for younger fans.
