There have been discussions about a possible Admiral Janeway series with Kate Mulgrew.

With the success of Kate Mulgrew’s return to animated television, appearing as Admiral Janeway and Hologram Captain Janeway on Star Trek: Prodigy, there have been talks about a potential live-action series. Mulgrew told fans at New York Comic Con that the decision is ultimately up to Alex Kurtzman. That doesn’t mean that she’s not on board. The actress said she just hopes it happens while Janeway was still ambulatory.

During a round-table discussion before the New York Comic Con panel, Collider brought up the subject of the live-action series, and Mulgrew demurred, saying she hadn’t been saying that, and that other people had been saying that. [Presumably, she was saying that she hasn’t been the one bringing up the topic of a live-action Janeway series.]

That doesn’t mean Kate Mulgrew isn’t on board with the idea.

In fact, Mulgrew already has her bridge crew in mind should Admiral Janeway return to television and takes on a ship of her, perhaps, even, the USS Dauntless. As far as what her ideal bridge crew would be, Mulgrew had this to say:

"I’ll tell you one thing: every color, every gender, [and] every disposition will be represented on that bridge if I’m the Captain again. And really representative, so that we know their backstory, so that their backstories of who they are enriches what’s going on the bridge. A real deep dive into all the changes that our society has made. That’s what I’d like. And if each and every one of them can be a brilliant actor, I just win, don’t I?"

The Admiral has spoken, and it’s clear that she’s going to have a say in who shares the bridge with her should a live-action series come to fruition. She also made clear that we would know the backstories of these characters. This way, they wouldn’t be cardboard cutouts.

You can’t really blame her for this idea as we really didn’t get to know the crew of Star Trek: Voyager that well during its run. Sadly, we learned more about Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) in four seasons than we did Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) and Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran) in seven. Mulgrew’s determination would certainly fix that.

As to whether such a series will actually happen, who knows? With Star Trek: Picard ending in 2023, it’s possible Kurtzman will want to continue following up with the original captains in a limited series run.

Alex Kurtzman would love to bring live-action Janeway back. dark. Next
