Tim Allen is unsure why Galaxy Quest 2 isn’t happening.
Speaking with his daughter Elizabeth Allen-Dick, legendary actor and star of Galaxy Quest, Tim Allen, spoke with ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian recently to hype up the new series; The Santa Clauses. During the interview, Killian asked Allen about Galaxy Quest 2 and if the project is any closer to coming to fruition.
Allen responded;
"Consistently, this crew and everybody else with Galaxy Quest has been fighting to do this ‘moments later’ when the Thermians come back. We literally just talked about this yesterday, a group of us here, and we don’t know why [it hasn’t happened]. There’s been a script and our friend Alan Rickman passed away, so that script involving he and I in the whole story disappeared. The story itself was so clever and so fun. I love that crew and I love everything about Galaxy Quest."
The project has long been rumored and we’ve heard everything from it being a sequel film that streams to being a mini-series or even a streaming series that gets multiple seasons just like something along the lines of Cobra Kai; another film turned series.
As of right now, it doesn’t seem like Galaxy Quest is any closer to happening, at least according to Allen.
The Alan Rickman of it all
One of the big issues surrounding a Galaxy Quest sequel project surrounds the topic of Alan Rickman. Rickman passed away several years back, making his involvement in Galaxy Quest an impossibility. Figuring out what to do with his character, who was pivotal in the first film, is a tall task.
It’s not easy to replace the character, it’s even harder to recast them. Black Panther 2 is having this issue, with many not happy with the handling of the passing of Chadwick Boseman, who starred in the first Black Panther film. Some are mad they didn’t recast him, and others are unhappy with the reception the second film got without him. Another example, should it ever happen, is what to do with Anton Yelchin’s character in the Kelvin timeline Star Trek films. Yelchin played Pavel Chekov, and it’s unsure what they’ll do with the character going forward.
Replacing Rickman in any Galaxy Quest isn’t going to be easy, and there really isn’t a good way to handle even trying to do just that.
