Captain Pike’s hair has become almost as popular as the captain himself on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Shortly after Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuted, social media was lit up with conversations about Captain Christopher Pike’s (Anson Mount) hair. Now, it’s taking on a new role on the cover of IDW Publishing’s first comic book series that’s based on the series. Unveiling in December, the series, The Illyrian Enigma, will fill in the gap between seasons one and two of the show, and artist Chris Fenoglio created the cover that highlights Pike’s do in all its splendor. According to Fenoglio, who shared the image on his Twitter account, he wasn’t solicited to create the cover. Instead, he took a chance and sent it in. And it was accepted for the comic book series. A talented artist and illustrator, Fenoglio has worked on Goosebumps, X-Files: Origins, Star Wars: Tales from Vader’s Castle, and more. And now, he’s taken a step into the final frontier with his Lower Decks’ style version of Captain Pike’s pompadour. And it’s a brilliant piece of art.

Captain Pike’s hair is deserving of the attention.

Fenoglio knocked it out of the park with his rendition of the captain’s well-to-do mane, and he took a chance creating the cover and sending it in unsolicited. But he was sure to tell his Twitter followers that he wasn’t telling them to cold pitch random editors that you don’t have a previous working relationship with.

Fenoglio was especially impressed with the way the height of Pike’s hair blocks the comic’s title, which tends to happen when images of the captain’s hair are utilized. And there were plenty of fans who gave the thumbs-up to the cover as well. Needless to say, it’s a hit.

The Illyrian Enigma is written by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson and iillustrated by Megan Levens. Look for it December 2023.
