Star Trek: Picard will feature some callbacks to Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek: Picard is heading into its third and final season. The show will try to honor its legacy and the legacies of other shows that helped build the franchise by including other concepts from past Trek shows. Specifically, the other shows that took place in and around the Jean-Luc Picard era of Star Trek. So any show that took place when Picard was the captain of the Enterprise will have elements represented in Picard’s final season.

We already knew that there’d be Voyager elements, with the Borg callbacks in the first two seasons, the involvement of Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, and rumors that Kate Mulgrew may pop up as a cameo in the final season.

Yet, Picard showrunner Terry Matalas revealed that not only will Voyager be represented to some degree, but Deep Space Nine will as well. According to Den of Geek, the involvement of Deep Space Nine goes beyond Worf, who shared screentime on both DS9 and TNG, but that “huge events” from Deep Space Nine will play a key development in Picard’s plot.

But what could that be and who could we see?

What can we expect from the Deep Space Nine inclusion into Star Trek: Picard

Right off the top of my head, either we’re getting some sort of Bajoran wormhole alien nonsense, remnants of the Dominion War, or the return of Benjamin Sisko, though the latter isn’t very likely. Personally, it feels more likely that we’re going to see a Star Wars-like revival of The Dominion to some degree. Much like that franchise brought back the Empire as The First Order, the plot of Picard could see Star Fleet trying to stop a revival of the Gamma Quadrant power.

As far as characters go, while Sisko makes total sense, the most likely characters to pop up (besides Worf) are probably Kira Nerys and Dr. Julian Bashir. Nerys has already popped up on Lower Decks, once again played by Nana Visitor, and there were some interesting comments from her return that maybe it won’t be the last time we see her.

For Bashir, considering the show’s involvement with regard to augments and artificial lifeforms, it makes sense that Bashir, an augment himself, would pop up and be involved in some form or fashion.
