3 of our favorite Star Trek characters from the 2022 streaming season
By Chad Porto
Everyone has their favorite characters from Star Trek and these are three of ours from 2022.
Star Trek brought a lot of good content to the screens in 2022, and it may be one of its better years in content production since 1996, when we got Voyager’s 2nd and 3rd seasons, Deep Space Nine’s 4th and 4th seasons, as well as Star Trek: First Contact.
It’s been a good year for us Trekkies, and part of the reason why, besides the compelling stories, is the characters that we got to see in action. Now, every character on this list is a starring character on a Trek show. They may be a legacy character, but they aren’t portrayed by a legacy actor.
We’re going to do a separate list of our favorite cameos from the legacy talent, so keep your eyes out for that one.
Our three favorite Star Trek characters from 2022
Rok Tahk
It’s hard to pick just one character from Prodigy to gush about, as so many are so well written. That said, we’re going with the second-youngest crew (assuming Murf is “young”), in Rok Tahk. What made her so interesting was she’s not some special genius child. She’s just a kid, who had to learn a lot to save her friends. She’s sweet, funny, and her alien race is very well-designed as well. Attach a heart-breaking backstory to her and you have all the reasons why she makes this list.
Captain Christopher Pike
Getting to see Captain Pike in his full-on Pike-ness was amazing. Yes, this modern version debuted in Discovery, but it wasn’t until Strange New Worlds came along that he was used properly and given the depth that would make him such a unique and interesting character. Anson Mount’s portrayal has made this Pike the definitive Pike.
Brad Boimler
While Lower Decks isn’t a show I find particularly funny due to Rick and Morty fatigue (and when you make Star Trek’s Rick and Morty, you’re going to get burned out fast), I have an appreciation for Brad Boimler. He’s a throwback to the old Looney Tunes, a character based on slapstick comedy. It’s very endearing to see. Even his quieter moments, like him getting geeked to visit Quark’s is a treat.
