Star Trek: Into Darkness star, Alice Eve, didn’t understand the backlash for a scene she enjoyed doing.

Star Trek: Into Darkness is a film that generates a lot of opinions. It was essentially the retelling of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, complete with a new Khan Noonien Singh, but without an episode of Star Trek to set things up. Fans had mixed reactions to the film and while it generated mostly favorable takes, a vocal minority of fans still lambasted it.

They took shots at everything from the plot to Benedict Cumberbatch playing Khan, what race Khan should be, and of course, the infamous underwear scene with Alice Eve.

Eve joined the project as one of two mystery characters, the first being Cumberbatch’s Khan, who was first introduced as John Harrison. Eve would pop in originally as Carol Wallace, using her mother’s maiden name to avoid being tied to Admiral Alexander Marcus. When fans found out she was basically playing the iconic Carol Marcus, people were excited.

Then, in one key scene, James Kirk catches Carol changing on the shuttle pod, catching her in nothing but her underwear. Some fans had a really big reaction to this, and it’s still something that Eve to this day doesn’t understand.

Speaking to Inverse, Eve revealed she liked the scene and was proud of her work to pull it off;

"It was something I voluntarily worked with a trainer to be fit for, was very much prepared for, and very much enjoyed [doing] — filming, executing, promoting. The feeling I shouldn’t have done it, or that it was exploitation, was confusing to me."

Fans overreacted to the scene when Star Trek: Into Darkness came out

Considering the film came out at a time when male actors like Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans were running around Marvel films shirtless, it seemed rather sexist for the same fans who ogled the Chris’ to have a problem with a woman embracing her own sexuality.

It was a severe overreaction from the fanbase who projected their own issues onto a scene that didn’t require such a reaction. Eve’s role in the film was not just that scene, either. That’s something that those who had issues with the film seem to forget. She was a standout part, and she had instant chemistry with just about everyone, but most notably Karl Urban’s Dr. McCoy. Urban and Eve had one of the better scenes in the film, and it really spoke to how well they wrote her.

But of course, outrage culture doesn’t care about anything but feeding the beast. I truly feel Star Trek: Into Darkness is a Top 5 film in the Trek film canon, and a lot of it has to do with how good Eve was in the film, as well as Cumberbatch’s quotes being instantly quotable. Mostly due to his inflection.

Give Into Darkness a second chance if you weren’t a fan of it when it first came out.
