Star Trek: Picard begins its third season on February 16th.

Fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation have been wondering if they should tune in to see this next journey of the former crew of the Enterprise along with their beloved captain now Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. According to a recent review of the first six episodes from Mark A. Altman, one of the authors behind The Fifty Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek: The First 25 Years, [via Trekmovie], that would be a resounding yes.

Altman provides a spoiler free review that hits the highlights of some of the characters fans have wondered about, including Worf, who had us concerned because of his new dedication to pacifism. Altman says Worf hasn’t missed a step since the end of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, that Gates McFadden’s character, Dr. Beverly Crusher, finally gets to shine, and Jeri Ryan is seamlessly integrated into the ensemble, although there is no mention of Michelle Hurd’s interactions with the crew.

Three characters appearing on Star Trek: Picard aren’t mentioned in the review.

Though Altman does bring up Geordi La Forge’s daughter, Sidney La Forge, there is no insight into her father. Also left out is Deanna Troi-Riker and Lore. Perhaps including them would have given too much of the plot away. Or maybe they are even connected with some of those top secret cameos Terry Matalas mentioned.

Altman closes the review by letting fans know if they haven’t seen the first two seasons of Picard, it isn’t a requirement prior to digging into the third season. Instead, the focus should be on key episodes of Star Trek; The Next Generation as well as the movies. Of course, he couldn’t reveal exactly which episodes would be tied into the series as that would have given away some of the plot. Suffice it to say, though, if you’re familiar with The Next Generation, youi’ll probably know which episodes are referenced in the series. And then you’ll have time to watch those in between new Picard episodes.

After reading this review, I’m more excited than ever for the premiere next week. What about you?
