Ed Speleers would play Jack Crusher for 15 more years

Star Trek: Picard introduced Admiral Jean-Luc Picard’s son, Jack Crusher, in season three.

At first, the character was a bit off-putting, especially since we only knew he was Dr. Beverly Crusher’s son. We didn’t know about the connection to Admiral Picard, although we suspected it. Even after discovering his ancestry, Jack didn’t enjoy being the admiral’s son. That put some fans off as well as who wouldn’t enjoy being related to one of the greatest of the greats in the galaxy?

Though Jack Crusher didn’t immediately connect with his father, Ed Speleers, the actor behind the character, connected with the role so much that he could see himself continuing to play it for quite some time. In fact, in an interview with Collider, Speleers talked about how much the role resonated with him.

"“I don’t know, it just resonated with me. I joked to someone the other day, I was like, ‘I just want to play Jack Crusher for the next 15 years and then retire.’ I feel like there’s so much storytelling to do with him.”"

There are a lot of stories left to be told for Jack Crusher.

The series finale of Picard saw Jack aboard the newly-christened USS Enterprise-F as an Ensign fresh out of Starfleet Academy. He was given a spot on the bridge right next to Captain Seven of Nine where he would serve as a special counselor. Also on the bridge was Ensign Sidney La Forge, who seemed to have a connection with Jack. That could be the start of an interesting story to work in conjunction with his new duties.

But it was the mid-credits scene where Jack was visited by Q that really sparked a future storyline. Q tested Admiral Picard when he was captain of the Enterprise, and he decided that it was Jack’s turn to be tried. Not only would this create some more potential throwbacks to Star Trek: The Next Generation, it would pit Jack, who is easily able to hold his own, against Admiral Picard’s very first nemesis. So I would definitely have to agree with Speleers in that there are a lot more stories left to be told for Jack, and I hope we get to see them.
