Star Trek: Into Darkness is a controversial film.

Star Trek Into Darkness is 10 years old, and man, Trek fans are not on the same page on this film. Usually, it’s like a good 70-30 split whenever it comes to a property. Either 70 percent love it or 70 percent hate it, but Into Darkness is odd. I’d say it’s closer to 55-45 and the 55 percent of people who hate it, really freaking hate it.

I don’t know why. Yes, it was a retelling of the Khan story from the original Star Trek series and the second Trek film but I didn’t think it was bad at all. I liked it quite a bit, but also, I was never a huge Wrath of Khan fan, so maybe it just wasn’t ever going to be a film that offended me.

While I usually detest reboots, the J.J. Abrams-led Kelvin reboots were 50+ years after the original Star Trek, so I was fine with them in essence, but many fans weren’t. Though, more than not fans loved the 2009 reboot and even the third in the trilogy, Beyond.

Yet, Into Darkness remains a controversial selection. I may never understand why people didn’t like it, but I can at least tell all of you why I did. And no, not everything works, and I can admit that.

Now, please bare with me, I don’t need you to agree with me. I’m simply telling you why I liked it, not why you should like it. I’m just saying we’re all welcome to have our own opinions, and there’s no reason to be a jerk to someone who thinks differently than you.
