The 7th Rule Podcast is changing things up in the world of Star Trek podcasts.

The world of Star Trek podcasts can be hard, especially when you make your podcast a genre-specific endeavor. When the 7th Rule podcast launched, the goal was for them to cover the Deep Space Nine series. Since two of the original hosts were Cirroc Lofton and Aron Eisenberg, stars of the series they were reviewing, it made sense

Lofton played Jake Cisco while Eisenberg played Nog, the two men were best friends on and off the show, so their chemistry was obvious. Eisenberg would pass away, but Lofton would carry on the show with fellow co-host Ryan T. Husk.

And while the podcast continued on, the content they reviewed couldn’t. After all, Deep Space Nine had to end sometime, and so the things they reviewed would have to as well.

So after checking out the first season of The Next Generation with guest co-host and former star of the series, Denise Crosby, it looks like the 7th Rule Podcast would undergo some more changes. This time, they’re going back to the beginning with the original series.

Joining them will be Walter Koening, who played the original Pavel Chekov. You can watch the new episodes here on YouTube, or here if you prefer a podcast.

Star Trek podcasting has to evolve

The 7th Rule isn’t the only Star Trek podcast that had to change their format. The Delta Flyer podcast had its own overhaul they needed to do. This podcast was created by Robert Duncan McNeill and Garrett Wong, who both starred in Star Trek: Voyager as Tom Paris and Harry Kim respectively. They did the same thing the 7th Rule Podcast did but with their show Voyager.

And like with the 7th Rule Podcast, Delta Flyer had to change its concept. So after completing Voyager, they started doing Deep Space Nine and brought in Terry Ferrell and Armin Shimerman to the podcast. Ferrell played Jadzia Dax and Shimerman played Quark, the on-screen uncle to Eisenberg’s Nog.

What these podcasts should be doing is following in the footsteps of the Shuttlepod Show, hosted by Enterprise stars Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating, who both starred in that Star Trek series as Trip Tucker and Malcolm Reed. The stars are joined by Erica LaRose, and the trio does more of a late-night talk show with others who were on Star Trek and other stars who like Star Trek.

Their most recent episode was a chat with Doug Drexler, who worked on various Star Trek properties over his career.

It’s a far more effective format for long-term success.
