Eugene Cordero's best comedy role isn't in Star Trek: Lower Decks

Eugene Cordero is known for his role of Sam Rutherford on Star Trek: Lower Decks but his other major comedic role may be even better.

When Star Trek: Lower Decks launches its fifth and final season later this week, Eugene Cordero will once again voice Sam Rutherford. For fans of the series, they'll know Sam Rutherford as the partially cybernetic human, who helps make up the core group of four on the show. He's constantly featured in the series and is one of the fandom's favorite characters.

To no one's surprise, either. Rutherford is a loving, funny, and endearing character, and fans gravitate to him. It's partly due to the writing but also partly due to Cordero's excellent portrayal of the character. He's done so much work to bring Rutherford to life, it's almost shocking to know that of all of his recent works, it's not Lower Decks that he shines the most in.

Now, it'd be a lie to say that everything Cordero has been in has been viewed by the writer of this article. That's not the case. Yet, his most famous works have been viewed, and of all of them, it's Cordero's time on Tacoma FD that easily lands at the top of the pile.

Created by the same team behind Super Troopers (I and II) and Club Dread, Tacoma FD is a wildly well-reviewed comedy that features a group of firefighters based in Tacoma, WA. During the events of the show, the crew goes through rather comical events; like a prank war with the Tacoma PD, or a drunken bottle episode of sorts from inside of a glass elevator.

It's this series where Cordero shines most. He plays Andrew "Andy" Myawani, a mostly sweet adult who also works at his uncle's carptending company. It's when he's working for his uncle a more assertive side of Andy comes out, and it makes for some of the best moments on the show. Cordero's character is a key point of the first three seasons, resulting in some of the best gags outside of the fire station.

A major familial revelation involving his mom and sister being one of them, and Cordero's reaction helps seal the scene.

If you like Star Trek: Lower Decks, you owe it to yourself to check out Tacoma FD.
