Kate Mulgrew is certain a Picard-esque type of series for Admiral Janeway would do well
Kate Mulgrew has proven that even in voice form, Admiral Kathryn Janeway remains a much-loved character with dedicated fans. Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek's animated series, showcases a wealth of talent, not the least of which is Mulgrew returning as a formidable higher-ranking commander than she was in Star Trek: Voyager.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that fans have been asking if she would ever do a Star Trek: Picard type of show, but Mulgrew can't really answer that as she's not sure. At FanExpo: San Francisco, she [via Collider] told the audience that Alex Kurtzman had talked to her about that type of show, and while that got fans excited, her follow-up response didn't. "Janeway is beloved... I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I can't answer quite frankly."
She went on to explain that she'd given Janeway everything she had back when Voyager was on then added, "It would have to be so good. And I'm not sure it has all of the elements I need it to have." We're not certain what those elements are, but one thing we are sure of, and that's something Mulgrew herself said during the conversation. A Star Trek: Janeway series would automatically be successful. Of course, it would have to be in the right hands and with someone who knew Janeway almost as well as Mulgrew herself does.
She isn't saying no to a return to live action as she said, "I haven't closed the door." And she knows fans would follow her to the show, saying "You'd all watch, you'd all support it, and it would do very good." She can say that because Mulgrew knows her fans and how much of an impact Captain Janeway made on millions of lives and how Admiral Janeway has continued that tradition.
The one thing about an Admiral Janeway show is that it shouldn't focus on her retirement. I think that's one of the issues fans had with Star Trek: Picard in the beginning. And we certainly can't see Janeway as someone who would retire. Even though she did in Star Trek: Prodigy, she was quickly brought back when she was needed. It would be better to skip that altogether and just keep her in the action as that's where she does her best work!
