Kate Mulgrew wants to follow the relationship with Janeway and Chakotay in season three of Star Trek: Prodigy
Admiral Kathryn Janeway [Kate Mulgrew] and Captain Chakotay [Robert Beltran] have the quintessenetial will they/won't they relationship. In Star Trek; Voyager, as much as fans wanted it to happen, a romance didn't take place between the two, mainly at Mulgrew's request. With Chakotay being under Janeway's command on Voyager, it would have been a difficult romance to sustain.
Now, though, the pair have found their way back to one another in the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy, and that brings up the will they/won't they question again. The pair just reunited as friends after Admiral Janeway had been searching for the missing Captain Chakotay. Their reunion was sweet and heartwarming, but it didn't go any further than that. Does that mean it never will? Well, Mulgrew told Collider [via MSN] that "it would be very interesting to follow this relationship." She doesn't express what she wants to see happen, but when she mentioned seeing what could happen, she added "Perhaps I like tragedy." That prompted series co-creator Dan Hageman to add that "someone's got to go down." Kevin Hageman only added to the surprising and a little terrifying moment by suggesting the death of Janeway.
Would season three of Prodigy, or even a later season, really bring about the death of Admiral Janeway? It's not something any of us fans want to think about, even though, eventually it's going to happen to all of the captains and admirals we've grown to love and admire. Mulgrew didn't seem overly disturbed by the idea.
"The great thing is infinite possibilities. Star Trek at its finest. And these guys are going to take us there."
- Kate Mulgrew
Not every relationship on Star Trek has ended in tragedy so this probably isn't a serious conversation...we hope. If Prodigy does get picked up for season three, it seems things might progress with Admiral Janeway and Captain Chakotay. That doesn't immediately mean someone has to die, and quite honestly, I'm not sure it's something that would be covered in a show for young ones. I could be wrong, of course, but that will be the quickest way to have legions of fans deny Prodigy as canon! We just want to see love and friendship along with a lot of action!
