Patrick Stewart will be back in one of his greatest, most famous roles. But it’s not Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a Star Trek production--at least not yet. Fans are still holding out hope that Stewart will play Picard again in some sort of follow-up to Star Trek: Picard, which ran for three seasons and ended, believe it or not, nearly two years ago already… on April 20, 2023.
So, what role will Stewart return to? That would be Charles Xavier, aka Professor X, or iterations of him. Stewart is on board for the upcoming Marvel Studios megamovie Avengers: Doomsday. This comes after Stewart appeared in X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins, Wolverine, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He also voiced Xavier for several X-Men videogames.
It had already been announced that Robert Downey Jr. would play Doctor Doom. During a five-hour livestream event held on March 26, 2025, Marvel revealed the cast -- which crisscrosses the entire Marvel Universe -- by showing their set chairs in the following order: Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr., with Downey sitting in his chair and turning around to give viewers the shush sign, with his finger over his mouth. All of that led to a crescendo of music and a tag that read “Avengers Doomsday -- Now in Production.”
Star Trek fans will no doubt recognize that Stewart isn’t the only Doomsday cast member who has logged time on the final frontier. Stewart’s original X-Men co-stars Grammer and Romijn are both Star Trek veterans, with Grammer having played Morgan Bateson, captain of the USS Bozeman in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Cause and Effect,” and Romijn currently co-starring on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as Una Chin-Riley, aka Number One.
Odds are that more actors will be added to the Doomsday roster. One addition we’d love to see is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Captain Pike, Anson Mount, who played Blackagar Boltagon/Black Bolt in the series Inhumans and a variation of the character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
As Captain Picard might say: Make it so.
