Co-producer of Star Trek: Prodigy wants to do a Star Trek: Travelers series

All twenty episodes of the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy are currently streaming on Netflix, and while we don't know everything about the viewer numbers, we have seen that the show has reached the top ten in several countries. That could spell good news for a renewal for season three. And that is certainly what fans want as does co-producer Jennifer Muro, who made the announcement on Twitter/X on July 12th. But, if there is no season three of Prodigy [which is not something we want to contemplate at the moment], Muro has another idea for the next Star Trek show—Star Trek: Travelers.

Muro is basing the idea on the successful return of Wil Wheaton's Wesley Crusher to the second season. Wesley played a large role in helping Admiral Janeway's young cadets-in-training navigate the timeline. And fan feedback for the character has been largely positive. Even Wheaton himself, in an interview with Trekmovie, said it was "a gift" for him to be a part of the story in season two.

"And wow, am I thrilled to see fans celebrating Wesley Crusher, not just happy that he’s back. It’s not just like, ‘Wow, that was cool,’ but legitimately celebrating in ways that I never ever, ever would have expected."

Wil Wheaton

Wheaton hadn't seen Muro's tweet prior to the interview, and when it was shared with him, he didn't hate the idea.

"I’m not really interested in being an on-camera actor anymore, but I love being a voice actor. And I really, really love this animated Wesley Crusher. I love where he is in Prodigy. Honestly, I want more Prodigy. I want to see more of these kids. I want to see more of their story. I want to see more where that’s going. If that involves Travelers, yeah, I’ll show up."

Wil Wheaton

Fans certainly wouldn't want a Travelers series at the expense of Prodigy, and since animated series are expensive to produce, it's doubtful we could have both going at the same time. However, Lower Decks will end after season five which would leave an opening for another animated series, and based upon the response Muro's post received, Star Trek: Travelers would be more than welcome.

Prodigy has done so well with animation and storytelling that another series coming from the same team would be a surefire hit, especially with Wil Wheaton onboard. And who knows? Maybe even Dr. Beverly Crusher [Gates McFadden] could show up a few times.
