Star Trek: Prodigy's launch in 2021saw one of the best series in franchise drop. Originally set for a debut on Nickelodeon, the brain trust at Paramount opted to move the show to Paramount+ in an attempt to boost subscribers to the sagging streaming service. It didn't work and the move caused the show to lose most of its potential audience. Tied to a toy deal with Playmates, the series didn't get the traction it needed and was canceled by Paramount.

Canceled by the service, all while the series staff were halfway through creating the second season.

Not long after the series ended, so was the Playmates toy deal, doubling down on the disaster that Prodigy endured. Losing your show is one thing, but losing a toy line is a whole lot worse. Thankfully, the folks at Netflix saw the potential in Star Trek: Prodigy and picked up the show's then-nearly completed second season.

Now, the show is about to debut on Netflix, but what pertinent information do you need to know?

Is the main cast back for the series?

Right now, every major actor and actress attached to the series is back for the show. Kate Mulgrew will once again return as Kathryn Janeway. She'll be joined by fellow Star Trek: Voyager alumni Robert Picardo, who will return as The Doctor.

Also returning are Ella Purnell as Gwyndala, Brett Gray as Dal Re'El, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Angus Imrie as Zero, Rylee Alazraqui as Roh-Tahk and Dee Bradley Baker as Murf.

When will it begin airing?

The show will return to the air on July 1, 2024, broadcasting on Netflix. Unlike the past episodes, which aired weekly, Prodigy's second season will be released all at the same time. It's a controversial move by the service, which continues to be one of the services that still do bulk drops of a series.

How many episodes is it?

Like with season one, Prodigy will have 20 episodes that drop. That matches the first season total, which also had 20 episodes. The first season, however, had two release schedules, dropping 10 at the end of 2021, and the other 10 at the end of 2022. This time, all 20 will drop at once on July 1.

Will there be a third season?

Right now there is no scheduled third season. The series' performance on the service will determine if there's another season and how many more will come thereafter.
