It sounds like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is planning for more than five seasons

Season three of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will debut next year, and the season four renewal is already in the bag. Since Star Trek: Discovery debuted, no Star Trek series has gone on longer than five seasons, which means Strange New Worlds could be getting close to the end of its run...or is it?

Strange New Worlds is, by far, an extremely successful Star Trek series, and, though expensive to produce, it has been a boon to Paramount+ as it brings in new subscribers, and current subscribers remain committed because of the series. So, with such a sure thing, will Paramount+ hold to its "five season run only" tradition, or will there be more?

According to executive producer Akiva Goldsman, via an interview with Variety [via Inverse], the series isn't in any hurry to leave and "will continue on for as long as Paramount lets us." There has already been talk about the series running into the first year of Star Trek: The Original Series, but that would mean saying goodbye to Anson Mount's Captain Pike, which is one of the reasons why Strange New Worlds is so successful.

Though an ensemble cast, the series is held together by the strength of the original team which was brought aboard Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery's second season. Though we only saw Number One [Rebecca Romijn] briefly, both Anson Mount and Ethan Peck's Spock played pivotal roles on the season, and were two of the main reasons why fans began to petition for a spin-off.

We already know what happens to Captain Pike to force him to leave the Enterprise, but Number One is not a part of The Original Series and neither are Lt. Erica Ortegas [Melissa Navia] and La'an Noonien Singh [Christina Chong]. So if Strange New Worlds does decide to get closer to The Original Series, we'll see characters departing which is probably not something fans want to see.

There is still plenty of time before Captain Kirk takes over the Enterprise, and we can only hope that Strange New Worlds extends that time if it wants to continue with additional seasons.
