Kate Mulgrew says a Dal/Gwyn romance is right for Star Trek: Prodigy

As season one of Star Trek: Prodigy was drawing to a close, Dal [Brett Gray] and Gwyn [Ella Purnell] shared a kiss that hinted at the beginning of something more than a friendship. That potential romance wasn't explored in season two of the series, but season three could give the writers a chance to explore it with Gwyn and Dal working so closely together. Even though she's the captain of the new Protostar, and Dal is her first officer, the two don't have a typical command structure.

Kate Mulgrew, in speaking to CinemaBlend at San Diego Comic Con, saw a reason why a romance couldn't work between her character, Captain Janeway, and Chakotay [Robert Beltran] on Star Trek; Voyager, but she thinks a relationship between Dal and Gwyn could happen without the same issues that might have befallen Star Trek's first female captain.

"I was the first female Captain. There was no way I was going to say, 'Chakotay in my Ready Room for a little dingle dangle.' It's fair in this story. It's right in this story. It wasn't in mine. And I think that the tension between those two is terrific as long as you [points to Kevin and Dan Hageman] sustain that."

Prodigy was created with younger viewers in mind who could learn the basics of Starfleet but also explore the meaning of friendship, loyalty, and teamwork. The series is covering what practically every juvenile will experience at some point in their lives, including feelings of self-doubt, achieving successes, making mistakes, and struggling to find their place in life. So it's only natural that a romance would be explored as well. Such a connection would offer plenty of teaching moments for those viewers embarking on their own first-time relationship. So if Prodigy gets renewed for season three, maybe we'll see them take the next step in their relationship.
