After proclaiming itself to be the home for Star Trek then cancelling and removing Star Trek: Prodigy from its channel, Paramount+ has now removed all of the ten orginal Star Trek films which includeThe Motion Picture,The Wrath of Khan,The Search for Spock,The Voyage Home,The Final Frontier, andThe Undiscovered Country as well as, Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis.

As of January 1, 2024, all ten movies have left the platform and have gone to Max (previously HBO) This happened previously in November 2022, with the same movies moving from Paramount+ to Max before returning in July 2023. The three Kelvin-timeline movies (Star Trek 2009,Into Darkness, and Beyond) are still available on Paramount+.

Paramount Global is in talks with Warner Bros. Discovery for a potential merger, and the streaming channel has not had positive cash flow since its inception so a licensing deal to gain income should not come as a big surprise. Paramount had hoped to keep all of Star Trek in one place, but clearly, that wasn't financially feasible so the licensing deals are returning. But what could this mean for the future of Trek?

Until the merger, I wouldn't be surprised to see more deals that transfer the mainstay Star Trek series, including The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise from Paramount+ as well. They have previously been available on Netflix and Amazon Prime, and according to Trekmovie, Netflix paid a chunck of the cost for the early seasons of Discovery for the international streaming rights, and Amazon did the same forPicard and Lower Decks. So clearly, these are lucrative deals. Perhaps it's time to go to licensing again for all of the Trek series that are no longer being produced as viewers are bound to become tired of bouncing from one channel to another to watch their favorites.
