Starfleet Academy just rounded out its cast of cadets with the addition of Canadian actor and model Sandro Rosta. [via Trekmovie] The new Star Trek series will be set in the 32nd century and will include Tig Notaro from Star Trek: Discovery and Robert Picardo from Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Prodigy as series regulars. Both Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman from Discovery will be recurring characters while Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti will be main stars for the first season. With Giamatti playing the season's villain, it isn't expected that he will last longer than one season. Also starring as an instructor is Gina Yashere from Bob Hearts Abishola.

Starfleet Academy is set to begin production at the end of August at Pinewood Studios where Discovery was filmed. Also included in the cast are Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diane, and Zoë Steiner.

Though the series will begin production this year, it probably won't make its debut on Paramount+ until 2026. The only new Star Trek coming this year is Star Trek: Lower Decks which will air its fifth and final season beginning in October. In 2025, we can look forward to the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and, presumably, the Section 31 movie starring Michelle Yeoh. Although a comedy series has been greenlit as well, that one probably won't be starting production anytime soon.

Projects are thinning out for Star Trek from the time when we had five new series. With Discovery having wrapped its final season and Lower Decks coming to a close, the only new Trek series we'll have next year is Strange New Worlds which will then put us in a drought. Though there is still a chance the Section 31 movie could be a backdoor to a series, that wouldn't likely come about any sooner than the comedy series. And while fans are still crossing their fingers for a third season pick-up for Star Trek: Prodigy, that, too, would take a long time to come to fruition. After Strange New Worlds, we'll just have to resign ourselves to being in for a long wait.
