Robert Picardo wants to give The Doctor something he didn't get in Voyager if season 3 of Prodigy happens
The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager, though gruff and unfriendly at first, became a fan favorite as the seasons progressed. With wit and intelligence, the Emergency Medical Hologram, played by Robert Picardo, soon won over the crew of Voyager as well. So it's no surprise that Picardo was asked to reprise the character in season two of Star Trek: Prodigy, the animated young adult series that's currently streaming on Netflix.
Picardo's role as the mentor to the team of would-be Starfleet Academy cadets suited him to a T, and he was right there with the one-liners. Essentially, he slipped right back into the character, as comfortable as though it were 1997 instead of 2024.
Prodigy's second season on Netflix has been a big success, and there's hope for a season three, which would, presumably, include The Doctor. If that's the case, Picardo already has in mind something he wants his character to get that he never got on Voyager—a romance.
In an interview with Collider, Picardo called it "the best thing in the world." And though he doesn't believe such a thing would work in live-action because of his age (I vehemently disagree!), he can see it happening in animation.
"It's always fun at a certain stage of life to play a character who's acting like he's a 16-year-old on a date, and you can't do that in live-action, but you can certainly do it in voiceover. So, yeah, it would be fun to see a personal episode of the Doctor."

Though Prodigy is a series for a younger viewing audience, it has drawn in fans of Voyager who have wanted a continuation of the series in some form since it wrapped in 2001. Those fans were hoping for a resolution to the will they/won't they relationship between Admiral Janeway and Captain Chakotay, but that was a route that wasn't taken. A solid romantic path wasn't chosen for The Doctor in Voyager, either, although, there were a couple of episodes that gave us a glimpse of what might have been. Prodigy, though, could do right by The Doctor and give him the family and happy ending he deserves.
Though a hologram, The Doctor has worked hard to become autonomous and known as a sentient being. Nowhere else in Star Trek is there a hologram with a romantic partner. So this would be Prodigy's chance to branch out into uncharted territory. Season two of the series has proven that it's the perfect place for new characters and dreams. Here's hoping for both a season three of Prodigy and a romance for The Doctor.
