Section 31 star calls the movie "hybrid" which doesn't sound too promising

Section 31, the first streaming Star Trek movie from Paramount+, has already taken some hits since the recent release of the teaser trailer. The modern music combined with the moodiness didn't sit well with fans who proclaimed the movie wasn't made for Star Trek fans. One of the stars of the upcoming film, Omari Hardwick, who plays Power, said something in an interview with Variety at San Diego Comic Con that may not bring a lot of comfort to fans.

"There’s still that marriage, the hybrid of the sort of formality that we grew up watching, and yet it still has this dirty, sort of edgy take on it—where a sense of humor is allowed. That was just amazing for us."

Turning a Star Trek movie into a hybrid film that is only partially the Trek we know and love may make fans question even more if they're going to tune in. When a fan thinks about Star Trek, the words "dirty" and "sort of edgy" don't really come into play. And though it's understandable these words could apply to Section 31, it sounds like the movie is going to lean away from the optimism and heroism that is Star Trek.

Section 31 is a questionable part of Starfleet so there's always been an understanding this wasn't going to be "typical" Trek as these agents have to cross into grey areas. But there have been moments in other Trek series that have left fans questioning whether a captain or another crew member has crossed a line. In doing so, that makes it difficult for that character to be seen in the best light. Consider Star Trek: Voyager's "Tuvix" and Star Trek: Enterprise's "Doctor, Doctor."

Is that type of ambiguity what we have to look forward to in Section 31? And, if so, are we going to be comfortable with that? Personally, I know I'll be watching the movie, but I'm on the fence about what to expect. Perhaps it will surprise me and the rest of the fans!
