Star Trek: Picard showrunner thinks Star Trek: Legacy coming later could be a good thing

Star Trek: Legacy, the purported spin-off of Star Trek: Picard, has yet to find its footing with Paramount. At present, it's still just a hope among the many fans clamoring for its production. And though it's currently on the backburner, Picard showrunner, Terry Matalas, is not ready to throw in the towel yet. In an appearance on The D-Con Chamber podcast with Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating [via Screenrant], Matalas shared why Legacy being picked up later could actually be a good thing.

Now the showrunner of Marvel Studios'Vision as well as the screenwriter of 20th Century's Enemy Mine reboot. Matalas thinks that having a "formed relationship" between Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), who he compared to Bones and Captain Kirk from Star Trek: The Original Series, could be "really interesting."

"What’s great about it is, if it ever happens, you can come in late, and it would be really interesting to see what happened to all of them, like way down the line… To have a more formed relationship between you and Jeri. So, I would say never say never."

Matalas confirmed that he has already written scenes between Jack and Seven of Nine, and he isn't the only one who isn't fully closing the door on the series as Todd Stashwick said "there's always a chance" when he was asked about the potential for Legacy actually happening.

As long as there is ongoing discussion about the series, it leaves the door open, and knowing that Matalas doesn't think a delayed greenlight would hurt Legacy is a good thing. It might mean less of a chance for some of the stars from Star Trek: The Next Generation to return if too much time passes as they, like Matalas, may move on to other projects. But we do know that actors like Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, and Todd Stashwick remaining open to the prospect of Star Trek: Legacy, and having the series stars in line is always a positive!
