Star Trek: Prodigy fans have been anxiously awaiting news of a reconnection between Admiral Janeway and Captain Chakotay.

And the creators of Star Trek: Prodigy, Dan and Kevin Hageman, know the viewers are wanting to know what's going to happen between the pair when Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) finds Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran). And there's no doubt she's going to find him. Janeway has never set out on a mission that she was unable to complete, and according to Kevin, in talking to Trekculture [via Trekmovie], he knows what the fans are waiting for.

“And we’re still waiting for Chakotay, right? Thank God we weren’t cancelled because, my gosh, that would have been the biggest carrot in front of Trek fans…”

He's not wrong about that. But what's going to happen when the pair do reunite? Is it going to be a love story or will the friendship reemerge stronger than ever? Well, Dan offered up a little tease that didn''t gives us anything set in stone, but it's definitely something to get excited about.

“Now you have Janeway and Chakotay. What’s gonna happen with them? Are they gonna smooch?”

Would a relationship between Admiral Janeway and Captain Chakotay work on Star Trek: Prodigy?

Dal and his friends are the focus of the series, which is written for younger viewers. Yes, older viewers enjoy it, but it was created for a young audience. And there's one thing youngsters don't want to see—a lot of kissing. Season one ended with a kiss between Dal and Gwyn, and there haven't been any complaints, but establishing a relationship with Janeway and Chakotay would have to move forward with more than just one kiss.

This is a couple that has been on the backburner since Star Trek: Voyager began. Fans, or shippers as they're mostly called, have been wanting this relationship since 1995. To do it justice, there would have to be a strong connection that isn't just about one kiss and done. And can that be done realistically in a children's show in such a way that would satisfy the shippers? Well, that's something we'll have to wait until 2024 to find out.

Season one of Star Trek: Prodigy begins streaming on Netflix on Christmas Day.
