Star Trek: Strange New Worlds technically got its start on Star Trek: Discovery. The second season of Discovery brought Captain Pike [Anson Mount] aboard the starship as the interim captain and made searching for Spock as part of the season's mission. The resulting fan fervor brought Strange New Worlds to life, and now in its third season, it remains as popular as ever. In fact, it ranks at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest of all of the Star Trek series. [via Slashfilm]
This shouldn't come as a surprise as the series has been extremely popular since its debut and has easily nabbed renewals each season. Strange New Worlds has already been renewed for season four, and season three hasn't even premiered yet. And the long waits between seasons doesn't seem to matter to fans.
There is a question as to whether the series will continue past five seasons as Paramount+ has pulled the plug on both Discovery and StarTrek: Lower Decks after only five seasons, with some believing five seasons was now the standard in the streaming industry. Paramount+ didn't give Star Trek: Prodigy that many seasons before abrupt cancellation, pulling the plug on the animated series after only one season. Thankfully, with fan determination, it found another home on Netflix.
Though the producers of Strange New Worlds seem to be planning for more seasons, there is no guarantee Paramount+, which could be a vastly different channel once Paramount Global's merger with Skydance Media is completed, will opt to continue past five seasons. Skydance, though, did produce Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek: Beyond so that's a definite positive which could be in Strange New Worlds' favor.
Fans are still clearly on board with Strange New Worlds, and with it cresting high in the ratings, it wouldn't make sense to not continue the most popular of the series. But then, cancelling the other series didn't make sense, either.
