William Shatner talks about his two friends and colleagues while reflecting on Star Trek 60.

Part of Star Trek: The Original Series' undeniable magic was thanks to the on-screen chemistry TOS costars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and DeForest Kelley shared. And although the [Rick] Berman Era tried to recreate that magic, there was no duplicating what Captain James T. Kirk (Shatner), Mr. Spock (Nimoy), and Dr. Leonard McCoy (Kelley) brought to the table over the years.

And Shatner discussed his late friends and fellow Star Trek actors while discussing the franchise’s 60th anniversary in an interview published by AARP. Shatner said, “My memory of Star Trek is filled with the lovely people in it. Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, to name two. They were beautiful people that were good friends of mine, all dead now.”

As I alluded to before, Star Trek’s old Rick Berman Era tried to duplicate Kirk, Spock, and McCoy’s unmatched chemistry in the Scott Bakula-led Enterprise television series because of how important it was to the success of TOS and its subsequent feature films.

Unfortunately, as much as I love Enterprise’s Captain Jonathan Archer (Bakula), Subcommander T’Pol (Jolene Blalock), and Commander Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer), it’s difficult to catch magic in a bottle again.

And so, I’m glad Shatner brought up the late Nimoy and Kelley while reflecting on Star Trek’s 60th anniversary because we wouldn’t be celebrating the franchise’s diamond anniversary this year without the contributions of all three of those TOS legends.
