Celebrating the New Year by reflecting on the franchise's up-and-down Trek in 2025.
From a horrible streaming movie to a lukewarm third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to a brilliant audio drama, these are the most fascinating moments from the beloved science fiction franchise in 2025, ranked worst to first.
6. Star Trek: Section 31

Star Trek: Section 31's release and subsequent reception share the bottom spot on the Redshirts Always Die list, and they represent the most fascinatingly bad moments from the franchise in 2025.
The black sheep of the Star Trek franchise was set in the future, but it was so repugnant that it nearly set the saga back centuries — had it not been for such an established, rich history. Paramount Plus’ streaming film, Section 31, was a certified disaster with both critics and audiences alike, and not even the Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh was able to save this trainwreck.
Fortunately, something good did come out of Section 31, though. The movie was nominated for a Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild award (Best Special Make-Up Prosthetics), so the universally panned Section 31 can hang its hat on that impressive accolade, win or lose.
However, Star Trek: Section 31 is still responsible for the franchise’s worst moments of 2025. And the film is "head-scratchingly" fascinating for all the wrong reasons.
