Three spooky Treks are coming this October.

Coming on the heels of the news that Star Trek: Holo-Ween II is scheduled for release this fall, it turns out IDW Publishing is turning up the spooky factor when it comes to the beloved science fiction franchise. According to Fangoria, three Trek comic book titles will get the "IDW Goes Dark" treatment in October.

Firstly, the comic book series Star Trek: Zero Point will begin its run with a variant IDW Goes Dark cover by Jose Jaro. I mention this title first because I’ve just seen the horrifying artwork, and it is fabulous! The Zero Point Goes Dark variant features a wide-eyed Captain Raffi Musiker injured on the deck, while a blue, blood-stained, panther-like alien claw prepares to strike in the foreground.

Zero Point’s author, Charlie Jane Anders, promised there’s plenty of “Trek things” in the comic book, but it’s the perfect read for someone new to the beloved sci-fi fandom. “I've loved Star Trek for as long as I can remember — literally, some of my earliest memories are of wearing a homemade Starfleet uniform and waiting to get beamed up,” Anders said (per IDW). “I'm putting all my favorite Trek things into this comic: problem solving, ethical dilemmas, identity crises, and above all, chosen family.”

Anders continued by saying:

“At the same time, I'm determined to write a Trek comic that newbies can read with no homework required. There are no easter eggs, no callbacks to deep lore. Anyone who loves Becky Chambers or Martha Wells ought to be able to pick up this comic and get a fun science fiction story about artificial consciousness and exoplanets. Also, I'm talking to tons of physicists to get the most accurate science I can into this comic. I'm having the time of my life."

In addition to the Zero Point No. 1 IDW Goes Dark variant cover, two other Trek titles will also receive some howling-good Halloween flavor come this fall. The Star Trek: The Last Starship No. 12 variant is drawn by Hernan Gonzalez, and it features the comics’ resurrected James T. Kirk screaming in agony as a Borg's fingers scramble the sides of his head with electricity.

Finally, the aforementioned Star Trek: Holo-ween II four-issue series’ first installment will feature a variant cover by Andy Price. Deep Space Nine’s Odo looks more like Plastic Man as one of his outstretched limbs holds Quark high in the air, while Major Kira is subdued by the Changeling in the very definition of classic sci-fi bondage.

Personally, my favorite of the three IDW Goes Dark Star Trek covers is The Last Starship’s variant. In addition to my love of all things Trek, I’m also a lifelong Batman fan. And the left side of Kirk’s face is almost the spitting image of the Two-Face makeup that Aaron Eckhart wore in Christopher Nolan’s billion-dollar box office sequel, The Dark Knight (2008).
