Happy Star Trek Day, fans! 60 years ago today (Sept. 8), the very first television Trek, “The Man Trap,” aired on NBC in 1966. However, nearly three decades later, during the fantastic Berman Era, actress Kate Mulgrew was cast to portray the first female lead to command a Federation starship in the beloved TV show, Voyager.
Mulgrew portrayed Captain Kathryn Janeway during all seven seasons of Voyager, and now the beloved actress is reflecting on the 60th anniversary like so many others. In a video published on Creation Entertainment’s official Instagram account, Mulgrew shared what Star Trek means to her, which fans can watch in its entirety below.
Mulgrew rightfully points out just how much Janeway has not only meant to her, but also how the character has influenced so many women over the years. Much in the same way DeForest Kelley shared how Dr. McCoy inspired fans to go into the medical field when pursuing their respective careers, it’s clear Mulgrew understands how rousing and motivating the commander of the USS Voyager has been to members of the Star Trek fandom, especially where leadership is concerned.
I, for one, love that Mulgrew returned to reprise the role of Kathryn Janeway in the must-see Star Trek: Prodigy animated series during the Kurtzman Era. While it only lasted two seasons, Voyager fans were treated to a heartfelt and unforgettable reunion between Admiral Janeway, Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran), and The Doctor (Robert Picardo) during Prodigy's second season.
