3. 'Paradise' (Episode 1)
The debut episode kicks the show off in fine form. It opens as the historian Dr. Rosalind Lear lays out her argument that Kirk deliberately sent Khan to a doomed world. That brings in Sulu (George Takei, great as ever) to argue against the slam on his former captain.
So we have a logical reason for Sulu to take Lear to Ceti Alpha V and to find the records (Marla's log entires) left behind. The ensuing logs open with an older, broken Khan ranting about the injustices of the universe before flashing back to his first days on the world, setting the amazing contrast of his rise and fall.
"Paradise" establishes the plotline and the wonderful chemistry between Khan and Marla, each still uncertain of the other. A realistic touch is that Marla is worried she’s gotten in over her head, only for Khan to dramatically cut off her attempt to ever escape by destroying her communicator. There are hints of the inner conflicts of the Augments and the coming tragedy, with Khan’s character on display to ensure fans are enthralled from the start.
