Star Trek license plates are costing one New Yorker a fortune

Star Trek license plates are a novelty item that most fans know belong on the wall or on a collector's shelf. Some fans, though, have taken to actually using them, illegally I might add, on their vehicles. And one Star Trek fan is getting tens of thousands of dollars in tickets because of it.

Beda Koorey, a 76-year-old New Yorker, once had a legal license plate with NCC 1701 to show her love of Star Trek. But four years ago, due to her sight, she had to stop driving. That led to her turning in her tag and selling her car. But that hasn't stopped her from receiving tickets from all over the country, according to KSL.com.

Because of the illegal use of these novelty items, Koorey has been getting tickets for "red light, speeding, parking, school zone," as she told the news channel. Unfortunately, it looks like she isn't getting any help from the New York Department of Motor Vehicles as the response she got from them was "novelty plates being used illegally on the roads is a matter for law enforcement, and nothing in its system connects Koorey to her former plate."

So Koorey, who is on a fixed income, continues to be fined, and recently, she even received a call from an Ohio police chief because the plates were involved in a robbery. Whether its EZ pass tolls or other driving infractions, Koorey is getting bombarded with fines for which she isn't responsible.

"It all comes back to me, so the whole country has my name and address for tickets I don't even owe," she said. This certainly isn't fair to Koorey. So, Star Trek fans, help us spread the word to Trekkies and remind them that the $15.00 Star Trek: Enterprise license tag they bought online isn't legal and is costing one fan a bundle.
