Star Trek actor believes Lower Decks film would 'make fans so happy' (and she's right!)

Who else wants to see Mariner, Boimler, and company on the big screen?

Who else wants to see Mariner, Boimler, and company on the big screen?

Star Trek: Lower Decks was one of the most inventive and hilarious entries to grace the franchise’s catalog of work. Yes, it was animation, which is a turnoff for some Trekkies, but it deserved way more than a mere five seasons. And while attending this year’s Star Trek: The Cruise, Mariner herself, Tawny Newsome revealed what we all know: a Lower Decks movie would ‘make fans so happy.” Newsome said (per TrekMovie.com):

“I think that an animated movie is not that hard a sell. Now, I know how much s**t costs, and I’m just like, ‘Oh, we could make a movie so easy and make fans so happy, and it would bring in even more new viewers,’ because Lower Decks brought in so many new folks to the franchise, and I feel that.”

“Even going to the [conventions]," Newsome continued. "When I started going to the cons till now, like, there’s so many people that come up to me and are like, ‘My mom, my boyfriend, whoever was always trying to get me into Star Trek, and it wasn’t until Lower Decks.’ And now I’ve gone back and watched everything. I always call us the gateway Trek."

Newsome added:

"So, I’m just like, look, the industry is in a wild place, but for a franchise that’s trying to grow, and for a new corporation that’s trying to see how to keep bringing people in, it’s like, we’re cheap, we’re available.”

I’m not sure why Star Trek animation is often dismissed by certain segments of the fandom. So many great achievements came from these creative and must-see endeavors. For instance, Trekkies would never have seen Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) take command of the USS Enterprise if it hadn’t been for The Animated Series.

And Voyager fanatics would never had seen Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Chakotay (Robert Beltran), and The Doctor (Robert Picardo) team up again if it hadn’t been for season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy. The animated adventure is a must-see all on its own, but one of the most memorable moments occurs during that poignant reunion between Admiral Janeway and Captain Chakotay.

Would you enjoy watching Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi reunite on the big screen in a Star Trek: Lower Decks extravaganza as much as I would? Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
