Imagine John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s Trek “on the biggest screens possible.”
10 years have passed since Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto served as Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock respectively on the USS Enterprise, and that was the last time Star Trek appeared in theaters. Since then, for better or worse, Trek has been relegated to the small screen, but John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s movie will be a “spectacle” beyond what streaming and television can offer.
Daley said in an interview with Inverse: “With the advent of truly cinematic television, I think the challenge then is to have it justify its place as a feature, a theatrical feature that in a perfect world is on the biggest screens possible. And that requires looking at it in a sort of larger sense than any kind of television show could do. It’s definitely something that we are hyper-cognizant of as well. There has to be a spectacle to it.”
J.J. Abrams had similar ambitions for his Kelvin Timeline films (Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Trek Beyond ), and his approach paid off both commercially and critically (all three are Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes).
All told, the three Kelvin flicks made nearly $1.2 billion at the box office (per The Numbers). By comparison, both Daley and Goldstein revealed in the same interview that they too are wanting to ignite a new franchise with their Star Trek movie.
As much as I’m enjoying Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy, I’m hoping Daley and Goldstein are successful in turning their single spectacle of a film into multiple theatrical installments. Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
