Confirmed: Star Trek is not ending!

The Paramount Skydance Corporation took center stage in Las Vegas for this year's CinemaCon today (April 16). And while the big news coming out of the panel was Tom Cruise officially returning for another Top Gun sequel, it was also confirmed that a new Star Trek film is in development (per Collider).

The confirmation couldn’t come at a better time because there have been certain news outlets, with their exaggerated headlines, suggesting Star Trek is officially ending. That is simply not the case. Unfortunately, though, there aren’t any new details out of CinemaCon about the big-screen Trek in development — only confirmation that the project is happening.

However, there’s plenty for Trekkies to be excited about even with the recent cancellation of Starfleet Academy. Two days following the Paramount Skydance merger officially closing in August 2025, it was revealed that a couple of Star Trek movies were in the works. And one DOES include Captain Kirk and crew. The statement reads as follows:

“Paramount is developing a film in the Star Trek franchise that features brand new characters; it has Andor director Toby Haynes on board to direct with Seth Grahame Smith writing and Simon Kinberg and J.J. Abrams producing. The studio has another installment with Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of usual characters returning with Abrams producing and Steve Yockey writing.”

It was then announced in November 2025 that Spider-Man: Homecoming writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley would be heading yet another Star Trek movie. But it’s not clear which film was being confirmed at CinemaCon because so little information was offered.

I want to remind everyone that this is the first Star Trek movie news to be announced since Paramount Skydance acquired Warner Bros. Discovery. So, hopefully, the recent merger doesn't affect the previously announced cinematic Treks.
