2. Character development turns friction into conflict
Recollection episode 13’s most entertaining material comes from Early and Accel’s escalating confrontation. Their intense glare across the canteen immediately establishes that something happened after Dizzy left them alone. The flashback reveals what caused the tension: Accel took the isolinear chip, pulled a knife, and decided to access the terminal himself.
Accel’s decision is invasive and reckless, while Early refuses to back down. She pursues him, jumps on his back, fights for the chip, and makes clear that she does not appreciate being treated as someone who needs to be confined for her own safety. Their physical struggle also fits their established tendency to communicate through sarcasm, challenges, and bickering instead of straightforward honesty.
Accel’s explanation reveals the fear beneath his impulsiveness. He does not know how much time they have or whether another opportunity to access the terminal will appear. His decision to “grab the bull by the horns” is poorly executed, but it comes from the same desperation that has pushed Early to hide clues and investigate on her own. Both characters want control over an impossible situation, but neither trusts the other to handle it.
Early’s repeated insistence that she hates Accel remains amusing, particularly when paired with her frustration over his mixed metaphors. The humor prevents the confrontation from becoming too heavy while highlighting how complicated their relationship has become. Following their kiss in episode 12, attraction now sits alongside distrust, making every argument between them carry an additional layer of tension.
