'Big Star Trek event' sets course for SDCC 2026 (but without William Shatner?)

“And they’ve invited me. And I can’t go… because I’m busy.”

Could fans get their first look at a new Star Trek film and/or series at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con? It’s unclear if that’s going to happen, but there is “a big Star Trek event” planned for "a Saturday night," according to William Shatner. The iconic Captain Kirk actor revealed the news while attending this month's Comic Con Liverpool.

Shatner said via Monopoly Events: “In fact, there’s a… there’s a meeting in San Diego at a big convention in San Diego, where a lot of people go — a lot of programs go to promote themselves. And on a Saturday night, there’s a big Star Trek event […] And they’ve invited me. And I can’t go… because I’m busy. And it’s like, ‘Too bad.’ I’m sorry about that.”

It certainly sounds like Shatner is speaking about San Diego Comic-Con, which means the Saturday night in question is July 25.

Shatner was also asked during the interview if the upcoming Star Trek event is like “another convention,” and it’s obviously not. The actor replied by saying, “Well, it’s bigger than that. I mean all the shows.”

In my opinion, it sounds like the 60th anniversary of Star Trek will be honored at SDCC, which means many of the franchise’s stars could be descending on Hall H this summer. I mean, where else would such a celebration be held?

My only concern is that Shatner isn't going to attend. The Star Trek actor continues to stay very active and downright busy making the rounds on the convention circuit. So, Shatner missing San Diego Comic-Con seems odd to me, since it's the biggest such gathering of the year.

In fact, he’s due at the Motor City Comic Con this weekend (May 16 & 17), and his Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan screenings just added new dates for this fall. So, whatever Shatner has planned, which conflicts with attending SDCC, must be quite important. I can’t imagine he’d miss the biggest comic con of 2026 otherwise.

What I believe Star Trek fans can absolutely bank on seeing at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con is some footage and/or even a teaser for Starfleet Academy season 2. Perhaps, Paramount Skydance (Warner Bros.) will even make a small presentation about one of the upcoming big-screen Treks — perhaps a poster or some concept art will be presented.

Plus, since Strange New Worlds opens on the first official day of SDCC (Thursday, July 23), I imagine those in attendance will have the opportunity to meet the cast and perhaps even have a designated watchalong for all the fans to enjoy. Maybe we will even see a clip from SNW season 5!

San Diego Comic-Con 2026 runs from Wednesday, July 22 (preview night) through Sunday, July 26, at the San Diego Convention Center. For more information and admission prices, please visit SDCC’s official website.
