Paul Wesley discusses their “unique bond.”
Step into the Guardian of Forever and wind the clock back three years. For the first time on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and much to the delight of the fandom, James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) met Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) in the must-see season 2 episode, “Lost in Translation.” And right away their chemistry was undeniable. Fast forward back to today, and fans just caught a glimpse of the the iconic characters and how they've developed an even closer friendship in the SNW season 4 finale, “Tomorrow’s Enterprise.”
Kirk and Uhura have only grown closer with time, and Wesley, who plays the future captain of the USS Enterprise, understands how important their bond is in the larger scheme of the Star Trek franchise. Wesley discusses Uhura and Kirk's "integral" connection in an interview (per TV Insider) by saying:
“We got to play with that [their relationship] a little bit in season 2. We got to show the two of them really uniting and having this unique bond, and I think that this is just a furthering of that. Him and Uhura are one of the most important relationships in the series, obviously, aside from, I would say, Kirk and Spock.”
For those who haven’t yet seen the Strange New Worlds season 4 finale, “Tomorrow’s Enterprise,” Uhura switches places with her future self, who is serving aboard the Federation starship Enterprise under the command of Captain Kirk, instead of Captain Pike (Anson Mount). And because of their close bond, Kirk is able to recognize that this Uhura isn’t his Uhura.
However, what I find even more fascinating — thank you, Mr. Spock — is how easily and quickly Uhura is willing to trust Kirk with the truth that she has transposed with her future self. That trust isn’t easily earned, and I love how the showrunners subtly gave fans yet another glimpse of how close these two iconic characters have become since they first met in Strange New Worlds’ “Lost in Translation.”
Wesley was also asked about Strange New Worlds season 5, but he didn’t give away any juicy spoilers. However, the actor did say this during the same sit-down: “In the finale, I think people are going to really — Look, our goal is to leave people wanting more, and I think we may have accomplished that, but time will tell.”
