Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ season 4 finale, “Tomorrow’s Enterprise,” was a true showcase for the USS Enterprise’s communications officer, Lt. Nyota Uhura, who is portrayed by the incredibly talented Celia Rose Gooding. And after the streaming series ends its run following SNW season 5, Gooding “would love to” play Uhura again. Gooding said during an interview with Comic Book Resources (CBR):
"I would love to [play Uhura again]. I hope that I’m not the last person to ever tell Nyota Uhura's story. I think it is important that the legacy of Nyota Uhura and the legacy of Nichelle Nichols is continued in conversation for long after my vessel is off this Earth. But if someone out there wants to continue the stories of the original crew of the starship Enterprise, I would love to be the girl to continue with Uhura.”
Gooding, who has portrayed Nyota Uhura since Strange New Worlds debuted in 2022, continued by saying in the same sit-down:
“Uhura has changed my life. I've spent all of my 20s thus far with her. While I'm excited to, as an actor, stretch out and try new things, I will always be at home in Trek. If anyone else is going to be marching into my house and getting in my fridge and eating my snacks and getting comfortable on my furniture, I want to be there. I want to have a hand in it. So yeah, if anyone's listening or reading… call me. Call me.”
For those who haven’t seen the Strange New Worlds season 4 finale yet, the following contains some SPOILERS from “Tomorrow’s Enterprise.” The whole time-travel adventure centers around Uhura, who is able to interact with a future version of herself through two points in time being connected by a White Hole in the present and a Black Hole a year later.
Gooding excels as both versions of Uhura, which must have been quite the acting challenge to pull off. Future Uhura is much more mature and akin to the badass iteration of the Enterprise’s communications officer portrayed by the legendary Nichelle Nichols on The Original Series.
And it’s clear from Gooding’s portrayal as Future Uhura that the actress would make a perfect addition to a Strange New Worlds streaming spin-off, if one is ever greenlit by CBS Studios and Paramount Skydance. Or, in my opinion, now is the perfect time for the SNW streaming cast to make the jump to the big screen.
Both The Original Series and The Next Generation casts successfully made the move from television to feature films. And now that the merger with Warner Bros. Discovery is closer to being officially closed, the new Paramount/Skydance/Warner Bros. studio would be in the perfect position to produce a Paul Wesley-led Captain Kirk movie series alongside John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s upcoming big-screen Trek featuring brand-new characters.
