3. Acting: Uhura’s quieter victory
The moon-side story gives Celia Rose Gooding’s Uhura an effective parallel challenge, which stands out thanks to her stellar acting. Cadet A’Sha begins her first away mission uncertain that Starfleet is where she belongs, then suffers a critical injury after the landing party is captured by Andorian mercenaries. Uhura has to act quickly and decisively to keep her alive.
Gooding brings calm focus to Uhura’s crisis, particularly as the young officer must accept a difficult truth: successful mentorship does not guarantee that a protégé will choose the same future. A’Sha ultimately decides to return to Vulcan, but the choice is not framed as Uhura’s failure. Pike and Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) recognize her courage under pressure and promote her to lieutenant junior grade.
