The hilarious and uber talented Rhys Darby returns as Trelane in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4’s soap opera episode, “Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass.” After first appearing in SNW season 3’s “Wedding Bell Blues,” Darby’s mischievous and charismatic character is back for more shenanigans, and the actor discusses keeping “the secret of Q (John de Lancie)” when he was originally brought aboard the starship Enterprise.
Darby said in an interview with CBR: “The secret of Q being revealed at the end [of ‘Wedding Bell Blues'] that was kept quiet. Linking the fan theories and making it canon, it's a perfect role for me. I mean, who else am I gonna be? I just love that this entity has so much power and mischievousness.”
Some Star Trek fans actually doubted Trelane was a member of the Q Continuum after years of speculation linking the late William Campbell’s character from The Original Series (the must-see season 1 episode "The Squire of Gothos") to John de Lancie’s fan-favorite Q from The Next Generation, and more recently Picard.
However, “Wedding Bell Blues” dispelled those doubts when John de Lancie voiced the role of Trelane’s green-colored orb/blob of an alien father in Strange New Worlds season 3.
And I’m delighted to read Darby, who is pictured above with co-star Anson Mount, courtesy of Star Trek's official Instagram account, speaking to the matter now that he’s played the character again in SNW’s homage to daytime drama in 2026.
