A SNW legacy character continues to evolve in season 4 through incredible storytelling.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 is just two months away, and many fans are curious to watch the continued evolution of legacy character Nyota Uhura play out over the final two seasons of the streaming series. And Celia Rose Gooding, who portrays SNW’s version of Uhura, is positive the show is “telling the right stories,” particularly where their character is concerned.
Gooding appeared in Mexico City to promote Strange New Worlds at this year’s Comic Con Experience (CCXP), and the actress had this to say about Uhura’s future (per TrekMovie.com): “In season 4, I think we really see her step into her confidence. She’s much more self-assured. She’s a lot more playful."
Gooding added:
"She trusts herself and her decision-making more. She has some tension with command occasionally, which I don’t think in season 1 she would have allowed herself to have. She talks back, she stands up for herself.”
Gooding, whose Uhura started off as a mere cadet way back in season 1, also said during the same sit-down: “I think we’re getting closer and closer to Nichelle Nichols’ Uhura, who cemented this role as such an integral part of the Starfleet crew. She’s the voice of the Enterprise. And so, to be able to get even closer and closer to her, I think we’re putting her in the right place. We’re telling the right stories, for sure.”
Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of information (or screen time for that matter) revealed about Uhura during the Strange New Worlds season 4 teaser trailer. At the beginning of the video, there is a closeup of the communications prodigy on the bridge of the USS Enterprise, and later Uhura shares a table with La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong). The latter ominously warns, “Any of these missions could be our last.”
In the very next image from the Strange New Worlds teaser trailer, a dinosaur — yes, a freakin' dinosaur — roars right before another scene in which Uhura pops up. Here, Uhura appears to be gathered with a brand-new alien race, along with several of her shipmates, including Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), La’an, and Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) — who might have the least screen time in the teaser with the exception of Dr. M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun).
I’m delighted that Trekkies will continue to witness Uhura’s growth, as Strange New Worlds looks to warp-speed the show’s legacy character ever closer to her counterpart in The Original Series. And I for one, look forward to seeing Uhura joined by Dr. McCoy (Thomas Jane) and Mr. Sulu (Kai Murakami) when those two make their respective, first appearances in the series finale. But first let’s all enjoy season 4 when it arrives on July 23, shall we?
