When Starfleet Academy was announced, Trek fans weren’t sure what to make of it. Positioned as the first true Star Trek coming-of-age series, it promises a look at the next generation of cadets preparing for life beyond Earth, and perhaps, life beyond expectation.

However, to succeed where Discovery divided its audience, Starfleet Academy must walk a careful line between bold new storytelling and respect for legacy. With that in mind, here are five things Starfleet Academy absolutely needs to do to win over fans.

1. Give fans satisfying answers about Benjamin Sisko — without undermining him

Hints that Starfleet Academy will explore the legacy of Benjamin Sisko are both thrilling and terrifying to long-time fans. Avery Brooks’ portrayal of Sisko in Deep Space Nine made him one of Trek’s most complex and beloved captains. When he joined the Prophets in the finale, his arc ended in mythology and mystery, a balance that shouldn’t be disturbed lightly.

If the series revisits Sisko’s fate, it must do so with care. Casual references or throwaway exposition won’t cut it. Fans want weight and spiritual resonance. If his son Jake Sisko or a cadet inspired by his teachings plays a role, it should enrich the mystery rather than diminish it.

The writers must show they understand who Benjamin Sisko was, a man, a father, an emissary, not simply use his name for emotional shorthand. A well-handled Sisko storyline could instantly add legitimacy to Starfleet Academy, bridging modern Trek with its most introspective era.
