Boldly going where nostalgia has gone before.
Starfleet Academy’s legacy clip honoring Star Trek’s best characters is expanded upon in a brand-new video (below) released today (Jan. 5) on social media. Again, the Academy's Chancellor Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) appeared on a giant screen introducing the new cadets to the rich history of the Federation. This time, though, the new footage included voices and visions from the past, including scenes featuring Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Lt. Worf, Jonathan Archer, and, yes, Benjamin Sisko.
Weaved into the new footage from the upcoming streaming series, the Betazoid love interest of cadet Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), Tarima Sadal (Zoe Steiner), was clearly using powers not unlike that of the Black Canary from DC Comics. Intense shockwaves were violently coming out of her mouth and even forced Caleb to cover his ears from the intensity of her built-in weaponry.
Tarima isn’t actually a cadet at Starfleet Academy, but I still find her and the Klingon student Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diane) to be two of the most compelling newcomers to the Star Trek universe — at least in the wonderful promotional clips which have been released so far.
Personally, the new Starfleet Academy clip makes me want to see more and soon. However, all the recent footage which has dropped online features a heavy dose of nostalgia. Certainly, I’d like to see that to a degree, but I hope the upcoming streaming series doesn’t have to rely on the past to prop up this latest entry in the franchise.
Share your thoughts and comments with us about the footage on the Redshirts Always Die Facebook and X pages. And Star Trek: Starfleet Academy drops on Paramount Plus Jan. 15.
Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
