“An unknown life-form’s hunting them…”
A new issue of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — Lost Contact is now available, but the cadets have lost all communication with the USS Athena. Written by Layne Morgan and with artwork by Corali Espuna and Nora Serrano (colorist), the adventures of the divisive streaming series continue in comic book form. Lost Contact No. 2’s synopsis reads as follows (per Amazon):
“A massive transvectous ozone storm has hit S’Eekay II, stranding Jay-Den, Genesis, Tarima, and Kyle away from their teachers aboard the Athena! What was meant to be a routine survey simulation on an abandoned planet has turned deadly”
The synopsis continues as follows:
“An unknown life-form’s hunting them, they’re trapped in a mysterious force field preventing them from beaming out, and to make matters worse, the cadets have completely lost their ability to speak to one another…not that they were doing great at working together beforehand. Luckily, Genesis has a plan to get them out. Only no one is listening to her. And if the cadets all don’t grow into their Starfleet shoes fast, their first mission will become their last.”
While I love the idea of more Starfleet Academy stories, I wish I could get as excited as actor Karim Diane is about the comic books. Diane, who plays Jay-Den Kraag in SFA, is thrilled to appear in his first comic, but, personally, I would have preferred to see these new adventures play out on streaming, rather than in print.
Nevertheless, Morgan’s storytelling is compelling and Espuna’s artistry is captivating, at least in the first two issues of Starfleet Academy — Lost Contact. The biggest surprise to me about the comic book is that Tarima Sadal is introduced on page 2 of Lost Contact No. 1 as still being a member of the War College.
So, rather than Lost Contact being set after the events of Starfleet Academy season 1, the comic book series takes place before the cadets’ fateful encounter with the Furies — and thus prior to Tarima being transferred from the War College to the Academy. Yes, the time frame caught me off guard. When I initially saw Kyle was one of the characters featured heavily in the story, I just assumed he transferred to the Academy, too.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy — Lost Contact No. 2 is now available and can be downloaded onto Kindle for only $4.99 through Amazon. And the third of the five-issue run will drop later this month on Wednesday, June 24. Have you read the new comics yet? Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
