4. 'Vox in Excelso'
Jay-Den is one of the best characters any Trek series has produced in a long time. This episode put him in the spotlight, flashing back to his childhood and how he broke from his people’s traditions to seek a career in medicine. Karim Diane turned in a fabulous performance as Jay-Den faces his past struggles and embraces a new future.
More importantly, we learn how the Klingon Empire was fractured thanks to The Burn, leaving this once proud race a shell of its former glory. The debate between Jay-Den and Caleb on the situation is fiery, and Jay-Den is ultimately brutal but brilliant with his words.
The final solution to the Klingon issue is quite clever, letting them establish a new home with honor. Jay-Den is the focus, yet it’s seeing the Klingons adjust to this new century that makes this episode more captivating. It’s classic Trek, using one character for a wider scope storyline, and it’s captivating.
