4. Reno takes command

Fans of Discovery already knew how funny Tig Notaro could be as engineer Jett Reno. Yet few could have imagined how capable Reno would be in a command role. As the only senior officer left, Reno not only takes charge aboard the USS Athena, she does it in style.

Reno is still the same sardonic woman, only now able to bark out orders in a way that makes her instantly the boss, who adjusts to the emergency. Even better is how Reno is still a teacher at heart, encouraging the cadets to figure things out themselves rather than openly directing them.

True, "Rubincon" takes the wry advice that “failing means death,” yet it works, pushing the crew to step up. It’s a stellar showcase for Notaro's character, Reno, and proves the she can provide more than just comic relief for the franchise.
