Will Starfleet Academy season 2 still end on a cliffhanger?
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s abrupt cancellation back in March made tying up the streaming series’ overall plot, individual storylines, and intriguing character arcs a bit difficult, given that Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau’s portion of the SFA press tour clearly teased a season 2 cliffhanger.
However, given that Starfleet Academy will now end after its final batch of 10 episodes, which are scheduled to drop sometime in March 2027, it’s easy to understand why actress Bella Shepard said the ending is “complicated,” during a new interview. Check out the video clip below via TV Insider.
“Yeah, it’s really complicated," Shepard explained. "We end off, I guess, sort of with cliffhangers, but also things get wrapped up in a bow a little bit. We’ll see.” And Shepard’s fellow Starfleet Academy castmates, Sandro Rosta and Karim Diane, quickly chimed in as both said, “No spoilers.”
Unfortunately, TV Insider’s managing editor, Meredith Jacobs, didn’t ask the Starfleet Academy actors if any new footage was shot after the announcement that SFA was being canceled.
Fortunately, for fans of the show, showrunners Kurtzman and Landau already oversaw the production and completion of Starfleet Academy season 2. So, even though the show was canceled within a week of the season 1 finale, the last 10 episodes will still be released on Paramount+.
Nonetheless, I assume, or, at least, I hope that Kurtzman and Landau are allowed by CBS Studios to do what Discovery did when that Star Trek series was canceled.
In that case, additional footage was shot to tie up most of Discovery's loose ends, and the reworked conclusion sent Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and company out on a high note… in my opinion.
Are you also hoping for a satisfying series finale, as I am? Or do you think Starfleet Academy will go out with the cliffhanger ending, which was teased during the season 1 press tour? Share your thoughts and comments with us on the matter via the Redshirts Always Die Facebook and X pages.
